The Kiss Stitch in the Round Crochet Tutorial

Hello friends!

Today I’m going to show you how to work the Kiss Stitch in the round. The Kiss Stitch is a type of crossed doubles worked over a row or round of single crochet.  It is comprised of 3 individual stitches worked in succession to achieve a single Kiss Stitch.  This creates a lovely textured pattern that resembles Xs and Os, hence its name.

This stitch can be worked in rounds or worked flat in rows, as in my XOXO Throw pattern.  For the purpose of this tutorial, I will show you how to work this stitch in the round.

Let’s get started!

The Kiss Stitch in the Round Tutorial

The Kiss Stitch was originally introduced in my XOXO Throw pattern, worked in flat rows, which is a fantastic way to practice the stitch. But if you want to use this stitch pattern for other fun projects made in the round, the beginning and end of the round will vary from the way rows begin and end when worked flat.

I’ve filmed a quick tutorial video for you, if you prefer to see this in action, otherwise, step-by-step photos will follow.

Step 1
Start with a round of single crochet in a multiple of 3. In my example, I have 27 single crochets in my round.

Step 2
Now you start your Kiss Stitch round.  Chain 4, which counts as a dc + ch 1.

Step 3
WORKING BACKWARD (to the right of your ch-4), skip 1 stitch and double crochet into the next stitch.  This creates the first Kiss Stitch of the round.

Step 4
WORKING FORWARD, skip the two stitches after the stitch at the base of your chain-4 from Step 2.  Double crochet into the next stitch.

Step 5
Chain 1.

Step 6
Double crochet into the first of the two skipped stitches (worked over the top and in front of the double crochet you just made in Step 4).

Step 7
Continue repeating Steps 4 (skip 2 stitches, double crochet next) – 6 all the way around, then join the round with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain from Step 2.

Step 8
Alternate Kiss Stitch rounds with Single Crochet rounds, working a single crochet into each double crochet and chain space around.

All done! Now you’re a Kiss Stitch ninja, so get ready for a couple of new fun patterns coming at you soon using this technique.

Happy stitching!
