How To Make a Tassel | Crochet Tutorial

Hi there, friends!

In continuing with my recent endeavor to refresh several old patterns and tutorials, as mentioned in my last post (How To Add a Picot Edging), I’ve continued working on tutorials that are featured in my Autumn Walks Triangle Scarf.

Tassels

You may have noticed, even if you’re new to the crochet scene, that the boho look is oh so in right now. One of the fun features or finishing touches you can add to a crochet project to give it a little boho flair is a tassel! Not just on scarfs either! Us them in home decor, such as on the corners of pillows, or decorating the front of basket, or whatever else you can dream up!

Today, I’m going to show you how I make my tassels, without any of the fancy tools you can buy, just using things you can find around your house.

So let’s dive in!

Psst! Right after the photo tutorial is a video tutorial, just in case you want to see one made in action.

To start, you’ll need your yarn, scissors, tapestry needle, and something of the length you desire for your tassel to wrap your yarn around. The width isn’t so important, so long as it is wide enough to sustain wrapping, but it should be flat for more precise measuring. For mine, I wanted a 4″ long tassel, so I measured and cut a piece of cardboard from the recycling bin to 4″ long.

Tassels are totally customizable! You can make a tassel fuller (or less so) in Step 2 by increasing (or decreasing) the number of times you wrap the yarn around your cardboard…or whatever it is you’re using to wrap around. Similarly, the width of the band, the part that separates the ‘head’ of your tassel from the ‘body’ of your tassel, can be as wide or skinny as you prefer. You would just have to adjust the number of wraps and placement accordingly. Just keep in mind in Step 6 to cut your piece longer if you want that wider band.

Woohoo!! You did it! You now have my full permission to tassel anything and everything you can get your hands on.

If that photo tutorial didn’t quite do it, and you want to see it made in action, check out my video tutorial below! You can find this tutorial and others on my YouTube channel.
